The Chairman declared this an Extraordinary committee meeting with two items on the agenda.
Appeal to MBCCL re. Ashley CC vs. Trafford MV CC result
On 21st. September, Keith sent a letter to the Meller Braggins Cheshire Cricket League, formally lodging a protest on behalf of Barnton CC about the result of the above match on 11th. September. The match was completed as a win for Ashley at 7.35pm. This was in direct contravention of League rule 14.3, stating that the match must not extend beyond 7.15 pm.
Keith circulated his letter and the minutes of a special meeting of the League Executive Committee held on 16th. September, at which the committee had decided, by a majority vote, to condone the breach of rule and allow the result to stand.
The result and our protest will be discussed as an agenda item at a League meeting to be held on Thursday 14th. October at Holmes Chapel CC. Keith circulated a note from League Chairman, Peter Davies, to brief clubs prior to this meeting.
Several BCC members will attend the meeting on the 14th. October, but Ron clarified that we have only one vote and need to nominate one spokesman to state our case. After some discussion it was agreed that Nick Yarwood will be our spokesman, and that our case will stick to the points made in Keith’s letter. Ron Jones agreed to attend the League meeting in his role as President. The other attendees, Keith, Nick, Steve & Jeff, will meet in Keith’s house at 7.30 on Tuesday 12th. October to rehearse our ‘presentation’.
Presentation Evening
This will be a cheese, wine and human race evening on Saturday 16th. October. Posters have gone up and preparations for provision of food, wine and organisation and sponsorship of the ‘horse’ racing are well under way. Keith and his wife are coordinating these preparations.
The captains, with Dave assisting Darren, now need to make a big push to sell tickets for the event, and get the money in.
The captains also need to retrieve the various player of the year trophies and select the recipients for the 2004 season.

Clubmark and Child Welfare
Peter Hancock came along to the meeting to give an informal talk on these hot topics. Many clubs in Cheshire are already accredited for Clubmark. Peter strongly urged us to register for Clubmark and this was endorsed by the meeting. Clubmark accreditation makes the statement that we are a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly club. Although Clubmark is not mandatory, it will be mandatory for BCC to conform to the ECB Child Welfare policy (now known as Safe Hands), which is part of Clubmark, if we have any players under 18 years old, which we do.
The first steps we need to take are :
- Register for Clubmark
- Appoint at least one Child Welfare Officer (CWO) and preferably two.
The CWO(s) will need to attend a 3 hour training course. Peter will provide information, and the necessary forms involved in the Clubmark process (via Nigel to distribute to committee). All information is available on the play-cricket.com website and will also be provided to CWOs at their training course. Christian has volunteered to act as CWO for the Cricket section only.
Peter believes sport is going through a culture change, and went through some ways in which we need to change how we work with junior players to assure parents that BCC is a safe place for their children. Steve Crawford asked about squash and bowls. Peter’s remit is only for cricket, which is ahead of the game, but there is no doubt other sports will increasingly need to adopt a similar approach. Child Welfare needs to be on the agenda of the Club committee as well as our own.
Peter agreed to give a presentation to the Club committee at their meeting on Monday 8th. March.
