Cricket Section Minutes 4/10/2004

Present : Keith Noden, Steve Yarwood, Nigel Morley, David Ollier, ChristianWatkins, Jeff langham, Ron Jones, Nick Yarwood, Michael Cross.

Apologies : Graham Coull.

The Chairman declared this an Extraordinary committee meeting with two items on the agenda.

Appeal to MBCCL re. Ashley CC vs. Trafford MV CC result

On 21st. September, Keith sent a letter to the Meller Braggins Cheshire Cricket League, formally lodging a protest on behalf of Barnton CC about the result of the above match on 11th. September. The match was completed as a win for Ashley at 7.35pm. This was in direct contravention of League rule 14.3, stating that the match must not extend beyond 7.15 pm.

Keith circulated his letter and the minutes of a special meeting of the League Executive Committee held on 16th. September, at which the committee had decided, by a majority vote, to condone the breach of rule and allow the result to stand.

The result and our protest will be discussed as an agenda item at a League meeting to be held on Thursday 14th. October at Holmes Chapel CC. Keith circulated a note from League Chairman, Peter Davies, to brief clubs prior to this meeting.

Several BCC members will attend the meeting on the 14th. October, but Ron clarified that we have only one vote and need to nominate one spokesman to state our case. After some discussion it was agreed that Nick Yarwood will be our spokesman, and that our case will stick to the points made in Keith’s letter. Ron Jones agreed to attend the League meeting in his role as President. The other attendees, Keith, Nick, Steve & Jeff, will meet in Keith’s house at 7.30 on Tuesday 12th. October to rehearse our ‘presentation’.

Presentation Evening

This will be a cheese, wine and human race evening on Saturday 16th. October. Posters have gone up and preparations for provision of food, wine and organisation and sponsorship of the ‘horse’ racing are well under way. Keith and his wife are coordinating these preparations.

The captains, with Dave assisting Darren, now need to make a big push to sell tickets for the event, and get the money in.

The captains also need to retrieve the various player of the year trophies and select the recipients for the 2004 season.

Corrrespondence/AOB

NEXT MEETING : MONDAY 1st. NOVEMBER 2004 at 8:00 p.m.

This will be the Cricket Annual General Meeting.

Ground

  • Jimmy Davies is concerned that the ground is being used for 6 Cheshire Girls matches, free of charge. This is already fixed for this year, but we need to consider our policy for the future. Graham will find out who to contact, via P Hancock. (C/F)
  • Ground inspection was carried out by MBCCL reps. on 27th. August. Abject apologies from Steve for missing it.
  • Despite variable weather, the ground is looking a picture and the wicket playing superbly (for batsmen). Jimmy has sorted out his end of season stuff.

Cricket

  • The first team are still in with an outside chance of promotion, and recently we have had no problem in putting out 2 decent teams.
  • End of season celebrations were discussed. Mike Elliott is trying to sort out a disco for the evening of the final match on 18th. September. Keith also suggested having a human race night with cheese and wine soon after the end of season. Following the meeting, Keith discussed with Mike, and the 16th. October has been written into the diary. Arrangements to be finalised at the next meeting on 4th. October.
  • We are suffering from the lack of junior cricket, and must aim to get it restarted next year. As we have nobody in the club willing to run teams, Graham proposed that we should employ a paid coach. Keith will discuss with Pete Johnson & Peter Hancock. We also need to build links into local schools.

Fund Raising & Sponsorship

  • Money is coming in slowly for the sponsored cricket shirts. Darren to extract from 2nd. team laggards.

Clubmark and Child Welfare

  • We have been fined £10 for fielding only ten 2nd. team players on 7th. August.
  • Latest CCCC minutes, and a letter from Bob Cunningham, refer to a pilot scheme in Cheshire for obtaining grants up to 75% for ground equipment from the Foundation for Sports and the Arts. There are a number of criteria for these grants, some of which BCC does not meet. One of these is registration with the Inland revenue as a Community Amateur Sports Club. Graham to look into this via web site prior to Club committee meeting.

  • Steve Yarwood to discuss pre-season work on the ground with Jim Davies.
  • VR coaching is underway. Neil Langham is attending batting sessions, Paul Coot will attend bowling, and hopefully ‘Smithy’ can get some wicket-keeping coaching.
  • We have been unable to arrange a pre-season friendly to date.
  • Keith will order the sponsored shirts. It was decided to order 50 in total : 35 large, 10 medium, 5 extra large, with three-quarter length sleeves.
  • Graham will talk to Roy Ramsbottom for advice on personal injury insurance.

Corrrespondence/AOB

  • Letter from MBCCL about the ECB ‘Safe Hands’ Child Protection Policy was read out. We need to provide name of club Child Welfare Officer by May 2004. CCCC have also sent out a note on this.
  • Form from Cheshire Youth Cricket requesting nominees for county teams at U10-U15 levels. BCC have no suitable candidates. Also an entry form for CYC U15 competition. As usual, we will not be entering.
  • Various stuff from CCCC, including :
    • Receipt for £50 affiliation fee
    • Information sheet on Cheshire integrated leagues
    • Information on Groundsmen’s day at Warrington CC on 27th. March. Nigel to pass on to Jimmy.
    • Notice of AGM on 15th. March. Graham will go if possible, otherwise Nigel should be OK.
    • Minutes of last meeting.
  • A couple of brochures on kit and ground equipment
  • Nigel & others have received emails trying to sell internet sites on ‘Get interested in Cheshire’ and cricket administration. We decided to take no action on either.
  • Steve Y asked if the Club committee would consider bringing flagpole back into use.

Clubmark and Child Welfare

Peter Hancock came along to the meeting to give an informal talk on these hot topics. Many clubs in Cheshire are already accredited for Clubmark. Peter strongly urged us to register for Clubmark and this was endorsed by the meeting. Clubmark accreditation makes the statement that we are a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly club. Although Clubmark is not mandatory, it will be mandatory for BCC to conform to the ECB Child Welfare policy (now known as Safe Hands), which is part of Clubmark, if we have any players under 18 years old, which we do.

The first steps we need to take are :

  • Register for Clubmark
  • Appoint at least one Child Welfare Officer (CWO) and preferably two.

The CWO(s) will need to attend a 3 hour training course. Peter will provide information, and the necessary forms involved in the Clubmark process (via Nigel to distribute to committee). All information is available on the play-cricket.com website and will also be provided to CWOs at their training course. Christian has volunteered to act as CWO for the Cricket section only.

Peter believes sport is going through a culture change, and went through some ways in which we need to change how we work with junior players to assure parents that BCC is a safe place for their children. Steve Crawford asked about squash and bowls. Peter’s remit is only for cricket, which is ahead of the game, but there is no doubt other sports will increasingly need to adopt a similar approach. Child Welfare needs to be on the agenda of the Club committee as well as our own.

Peter agreed to give a presentation to the Club committee at their meeting on Monday 8th. March.

NEXT MEETING : MONDAY 5th. APRIL 2004 at 8:00 p.m.

Cricket Section Minutes 19/1/2004

Present : Keith Noden, Graham Coull, Steve Yarwood, David Ollier, Darren Falland, Christian Watkins,

Nigel Morley.

Ground/Clubhouse

  • A new scoreboard is being made for us by Ash the barman, at a very reasonable price. The scoreboard will be located near the big garage.
  • Preliminary plans have been drawn up for improving the changing rooms. Timetable will depend upon overall plans for the clubhouse.
  • Jimmy will cut 2 practice wickets at the bottom of the ground.
  • We need to be thinking of planning pre-season work party, or parties, at the next meeting.
  • We should qualify for rate relief of 80%.

Cricket

  • Graham is still awaiting dates for 1/1 coaching. We may be able to put forward 2 batsmen and 2 bowlers.
  • Cricket balls have been ordered and paid for. Weaverham have some surplus MBCCL balls for sale at £200 for 20. Steve to purchase.
  • MBCCL fixtures have been published. Our first games on 24th. April are against Ashley, with 1st. XI at home. It is hoped to arrange a friendly game on 17th. April. Darren to ask Radbroke Hall CC.
  • In the MBCCL knockouts, the 1sts begin home to Davenham, and the 2nds away to Holmes Chapel.
  • Our application for winter net practices has gone in to Sir John Deane’s. We are hoping to begin on Sunday 29th. February. No response yet from SJD, so Graham will pursue.
  • Indoor cricket league begins this Friday. Winners will go on to regional, and if successful, national level. There are a few rule changes.
  • Graham reported on the last league meeting.
  • We have been fined £10 for non-attendance at AGM.
  • There are some changes on the results sheet including sections for umpires to fill in.
  • A new set of minimum ground criteria have been issued.
  • A meeting for captains and umpires will be held on Wed. 14th. April at Holmes Chapel CC at 8pm.
  • A groundsmen’s day will be held on 27th. March.
  • CCCC have offered help to clubs who have not applied for Clubmark (that means us). See below.

Junior Cricket

  • David is hopeful, but not certain, of raising a colts team together with Sandbach?? Otherwise, lack of organisers means BCC will have no other junior teams this year.
  • CLUBMARK accreditation will be essential if BCC is to run junior cricket, so we need to get moving. This means getting people trained up in child protection, first aid etc. Christian volunteered himself as a Club Child Welfare Officer. Peter Hancock is happy to come along to a meeting to give us a presentation and get us started. Peter can’t make 2nd. Feb., but can come on Mon. 1st. March at 8.30. We will need to set aside a quiet area for the meeting on that day.

Sponsorship

  • Hydes Brewery are sponsoring all sections of the club, donating a total sum of £1000 for shirts with suitable logo, with Rosebank Sports as suppliers. Players will pay a nominal price for shirts. Dave believes every senior player should get one.
  • The cricket section is still keen to approach other local organisations, and Graham and Keith will raise in the main committee. Nick Yarwood has drafted a letter to potential sponsors.
  • As there are no volunteers to organise ball sponsorship or wine raffles, it was agreed we should try football cards for raising money on match days. Steve to ask Mike to obtain cards.

Corrrespondence

  • Letter from ECB Cricket Development Office (P Hancock & Richard Newton) inviting us to apply for Clubmark.
  • Some information on personal injury insurance, which Keith will look into.
  • Information on Level 1 coaching courses.

NEXT MEETING : MONDAY 2nd. FEBRUARY 2004 at 8:00 p.m. (Apologies NM)
